Set Retarding

Set retarding concrete admixtures are used before the concrete begins the setting process to prolong the chemical reaction that takes place. These types of concrete admixtures are widely used to decrease the impact of high temperatures, which could lead to a faster initial concrete environment. In concrete pavement construction, set retarding admixtures are used, providing more time for finishing concrete pavements, minimising extra costs for putting a new concrete batch plant on the job site and helping to remove cold concrete joints. Due to shape deflection that can occur when horizontal slabs are put in pieces, retarders may also be used to prevent cracking. Many retarding agents also act as reducers of water and can bring some air into concrete.

Superplasticizer

The main aim behind using superplasticizer is to manufacture flowing concrete in the range of seven to nine inches with a high slump to be used in heavily reinforced structures and in places where it is not easy to achieve sufficient consolidation by vibration. The other important use is the manufacture of high-strength concrete varying from 0.3 to 0.4 at w / c. It was found that the superplasticizer increases the workability of concrete for most forms of cement. Slump loss is one problem associated with the use of a high-range water reducer in concrete. High workability concrete containing a superplasticizer can be produced with a high resistance to freeze-thaw, but the air content must be increased without a superplasticizer compared to concrete.

Lightweight Concrete

A mixture made of lightweight coarse aggregates such as shale, clay, or slate, which gives it its characteristic low density, is lightweight concrete. Lightweight structural concrete has an in-place density of 90 to 115 lb / ft3, while standard concrete density varies from 140 to 150 lb / ft3. This makes lightweight concrete suitable for constructing modern structures that require small cross sections in the foundation. It is increasingly being used for the building of sleek foundations, and has emerged as a viable alternative to standard concrete.

Water Reducing

Water-reducing admixtures are chemical products that can create a desired depression at a lower water-cement ratio when applied to concrete than what is usually intended. Water-reducing admixtures are used to achieve particular concrete strength using lower cement content. The lower content of cement results in lower emissions of CO2 and energy consumption per volume of concrete made. Concrete properties are enhanced with this form of admixture, helping to position concrete under challenging conditions. In bridge decks, low-slump concrete overlays, and patching concrete, water reducing agents have been used mainly. The production of mid-range water reducers has led to recent developments in admixture technology.
